Gray started with the town in July 1986. “The good things have always been the people I work around,” Gray said. “There aren’t any bad things, really. It’s always been a blast.”. As an avid outdoorsman, the park service officer’s job fit neatly with Gray’s lifestyle. But he does admit to a few bumps in the road in his 27 years. “There wasn’t a police presence in the parks until 1980,” he said. “So when the town started the ranger program, it took from 1980 to 1990 to get people to comply with the rules. From 1990 to today we rarely write tickets for compliance issues. Our parks are mellow. I think they’re some of the best in the area.”.
But back in the ’80s, Gray said, park officers were writing tickets for all sorts of infractions, such as beer parties and drug issues, “Those incidents are slim in our parks now,” he said, “We do a lot more maintenance now on Mondays through Fridays and primarily patrol on Saturdays sansha pointe shoe covers and Sundays, I like to stand back and look at a park and think, ‘You’ve done a really good job here.’ I’m proud we’ve made these parks very, very safe, The rangers’ continued presence is what keeps them mellow.”..
Over the years, Gray became known as a petty mellow guy himself. “My attitude has always been, ‘Make sure you follow the rules and everything’s great.’ Don’t follow the rules and you get my wrath,” he said. Gray cited the attendance at Oak Meadow Park during the weekend of Aug. 24-25 as an example of how people have learned to abide by park rules. “There were 2,000 people at Oak Meadow that weekend and we didn’t have any problems,” Gray said.
There are, however, still a few problems with people allowing their dogs to run off-leash in parks, sansha pointe shoe covers “That’s going to be an issue forever, I might invite all the dog owners to a picnic at Bachman Park on my last day,” he said with a laugh, On his last day on the job, Gray plans to work the night shift and will close up all the town’s parks “as a symbol of my leaving.” Gray will be replaced by Amber Pinkerton, who has worked as a seasonal park service officer for the past three years..
Gray’s most poignant memory came in 2011 when he was at the parks and public works offices on Miles Avenue and a call came in that a man had collapsed nearby on the Los Gatos Creek Trail. “A nurse who was in the office and I performed CPR on him and saved him,” Gray said. “Two months later I actually met the guy, and he was very appreciative to be alive.”. Gray is going out with a lot of memories and, indeed, with a bang: He was to oversee activities at last weekend’s Los Gatos Park Dance at Oak Meadow, plus a Labor Day party with multiple bands playing that was expected to attract 400 to 500 people .
