Despite the depth of the lineup, the first day was about McCartney. Indeed, it seemed like most fans were literally counting down the minutes until the former Beatle took the stage. And he was definitely worth the wait. The Liverpool native showed once again why he deserves to be ranked among the best entertainers in the business. He’s 71, but he’s no less “fab” than he was decades ago. Plus, he certainly knows how to give fans their money’s worth. His set stretched nearly three hours and featured dozens of great songs, including such Beatles classics as “Eight Days a Week,” “Paperback Writer,” “The Long and Winding Road,” “Blackbird” and “Let It Be.” His vocals were top-notch — and only seemed to grow stronger as the night progressed — and he was a friendly frontman, even calling a couple of female fans to the stage to sign their hands.

The set pointe shoes ballet also featured what I can only describe as a perfect rock ‘n’ roll moment, It came during the Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” as the setting and the song achieved an almost unbelievable degree of synergy, The trees were lit in shades of purple, blurred to just the right extent by a heavy haze of moist fog, A sea of arms waved under the bright spotlights from the stage, Smiles were everywhere, Tens of thousands of voices joined in song, led by the man who arguably qualifies as rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest living legend..

The fans had probably all heard “Hey Jude” played countless times before. Yet, not like this. Not like it sounded — and, more importantly, felt — on a cool summer’s evening in the middle of one of the world’s most lovely parks, with seemingly everyone cherishing the opportunity to join the former Beatle on perhaps his greatest anthem. It was a moment that seemed to go by too quickly, yet last forever — a combination that, I realize, sounds like something that might only happen on an episode of “Dr. Who.” Yet, that’s how I’ll remember it — and I’ll likely remember it for years to come.

The other big highlight of the day came courtesy of Nile Rodgers, who is definitely a man who knows how to throw a party, It’s amazing to think that this almost didn’t happen, Rodgers’ band Chic wasn’t even on the bill a few days ago, Yet, then D’Angelo canceled, reportedly due to a medical issue, and Rodgers and company were called to fill in, Talk about a major musical upgrade, D’Angelo is fine — and I certainly wish him a speedy recovery from whatever ails him — but his songbook can’t hold a candle pointe shoes ballet to what’s to be found in Mr, Rodgers’ neighborhood..

The group delivered a deliriously good set, highlighted by both Chic numbers and others that Rodgers — an incredibly accomplished composer, arranger and producer — had a hand in crafting. Highlights included the Chic hits “Le Freak,” “Good Times” and “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)” as well as “We Are Family,” “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out.”. Yowsah, it was fun time at the park. Follow Jim Harrington at http://twitter.com/jimthecritic, www.facebook.com/jim.bayareanews and http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/category/concerts.

And the disco/R&B icon certainly proved it during his band Chic’s performance on Day One pointe shoes ballet (Friday) at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, It’s amazing to think that this almost didn’t happen, Chic wasn’t even on the bill a few days ago, Yet, then D’Angelo canceled, reportedly due to a medical issue, and Rodgers and company were tabbed to fill in, Talk about a major musical upgrade, D’Angelo is fine — and I certainly wish him a speedy recovery from whatever ails him — but his songbook can’t hold a candle to what’s to be found in Mr, Rodgers’ neighborhood..
