If only the rest of the musical backed up the wondrous voices even half as well as Sean Kana’s enthusiastic, clear-sounding 15-piece orchestra. That would make for a much more satisfying night of theater. It’s apparent director Joshua Marx wants to put his own mark on this production, which runs weekends through June 19 at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City. His take on certain characters, the farmhand Jud being most prominent, sometimes work, but at other times seems strangely curious. Why cast a drop-dead handsome dude like John Melis as the troubled loner who spends his time looking at pictures of scantily clad women and lusts after the dewy-eyed ingénue Laurey (pitch-perfect, angelic-looking Jennifer Mitchell)?.
Another odd choice is putting Melis in almost complete darkness as he expresses his melancholy in “Lonely Room.” Yes, that may make the audience recognize that it’s a dark song, but it’s readily apparent from the dance shoes australia lyrics and the agony on Melis’ face (during the occasions when his face is actually visible), Another minus: With his deep voice, Melis is sometimes difficult to hear clearly, This scene is immediately followed by what is commonly known as the “dream ballet,” which is intended to show Laurey’s romantic conflictions, Most of it is also done in semi-darkness, compounded by the crime that — probably for the first time in history — it no longer is very ‘dreamy,’ nor is it anything like the 15-minute ballet Agnes de Mille created for the original production on Broadway (which was superb in every way)..
Problems with sight lines, a rather stingy set and dowdy costumes for the females in the cast also serve to drag down what could be an impressive presentation. At least the show has one exceptional thing going for it: The splendid voices of most of the main characters. The moment the cowboy Curly (a sincere and appealing Sam Faustine) strides down the aisle singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” audience members of all ages know they’re in for some fine vocals. The melodic tunes just keep coming: “Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Kansas City,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “The Farmer and the Cowman” and the powerfully thematic “Oklahoma!” are the crème de la crème.
As played by Ali Lane, Aunt Eller has never been cuter, spunkier or more unflappable, Though her vocal in “The Farmer and the Cowman” is thin, what she lacks in voice is more than made up for in pluck, Danila Burshteyn is also terrific as fresh-faced Will Parker, His renditions of “Kansas City” and “All Er Nuthin'” — and his high-stepping dancing — make him a likeable, homespun (and incredibly naïve) character, Cute-as-a-button Erin Yvette is winsome and flirty as the “I Cain’t Say No” girl, Ado Annie, It’s delightful to watch her pledge everlasting love to Will, only to be swayed dance shoes australia by the shrewd peddler Ali Hakim (a charmingly crafty Mohamed Ismail)..
